Russia Tundra Reindeer (Caribou)

August 20 – September 20

The area where we will be taking you this time is a thousand miles beyond the Arctic Circle in the tundra on the shores of the Arctic sea, to the right of the river Yenisey. The area as large as Italy and has only 39,000 inhabitants, mainly indigenous tribes of Eskimos. In this vast territory lives the largest herd Polar deer (as they are called in Russia), Reindeer or Caribou as they are called in Canada and America. The heard of Arctic deer in Taymir has over million animals and it is considered the largest in the world!

This enormous heard of polar deer migrates twice a year for about 1200 km, from the winter pastures, which are in central Siberia, to the shores of the Arctic sea where they stay from June to September during the short Arctic summer. In August and up until the end of September all this huge mass of animals migrates toward the south, crossing rivers and lakes of the tundra swimming. The hunt is done, according to tradition, when crossing rivers, when one can see and choose the best trophies. In the Arctic tundra, besides the huge herd of deer, moose live along the rivers, regularly patrolled bears and wolves, wolverines are also frequent, while in the more northern part Musk ox and also Polar bear, on the shores of the Arctic sea, can be encountered. One must mention also huge numbers of geese and ducks that come to nest in the tundra in order to get an idea of the fauna in these remote areas.

In these areas there is virtually no infrastructure, so we have built wooden in order to organize hunting and fishing. The hunters stay in the huts, with heating and external services and hunt, using motor boats, at a distance of several hours from camp. The hunt is done by waiting, choosing individual animals from the heard while they cross the river, and then hunting by stalking once they reach the shore, or by waiting for the heard on its usual passes. We have also set up baits along the river, where one can wait for bears, wolves and wolverines.

One must not forget predator Pike fishing, very frequent in the rivers, with specimens often over 10 pounds! We recommend everyone to bring their fishing equipment!

Hunting is done by rifles or shotguns, that we provide on site, in order to avoid tedious import formalities in Russia.
