Russia – Maral Baikal
September – October
Maral hunt, the great Siberian deer, is done during the roaring season, usually from September 20th to 30th. The hunt is done by walking and stalking or on horseback, closing in on the roaring Maral (whistle), or by calling it by special calls made out of tree bark. The local game scouts are specialized in this type of call, and they usually do it early in the morning or in the evening. Normally one to three animals can be heard during every exit and during one week there is the possibility of finding a good animal.
During Maral hunt, lodging will be provided in hunting houses without services, or in the shelters of professional hunters.
During the hunting season rains and snow are frequent and it is fundamental to bring water resistant clothing, and, as in all difficult Russian hunts, a sleeping bag is necessary, especially for hunt in Siberia, where having tall rubber boots is also important, since there is the necessity to pass through frequent small water courses and wet grounds.
